IETF - RFC7668 - IPv6 over BLUETOOTH(R) Low Energy

The low- power variant of Bluetooth has been standardized since revision 4.0 of the Bluetooth specifications, although version 4.1 or newer is required for IPv6. This document describes how IPv6 is transported over Bluetooth low energy using IPv6 over Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network (6LoWPAN) techniques.

IETF - RFC7973 Assignment of an Ethertype for IPv6 with Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Network (LoWPAN) Encapsulation

LoWPAN encapsulation as defined in RFC 4944 has been updated by [RFC6282], and may be extended and modified by future IETF Standards. The intended Layer 2 technology for IPv6 datagrams using LoWPAN encapsulation as originally defined is [IEEE.802.15.4_2011], which does not provide for a protocol switch in its Layer 2 headers.

IETF - RCF8025 - 6LoWPAN - IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Network (6LoWPAN) Paging Dispatch

As more and more protocols need to be compressed, the encoding capabilities of the original dispatch defined in the 6LowPAN adaptation-layer framework ([RFC4944] and [RFC6282]) becomes saturated. This specification introduces a new context switch mechanism for 6LoWPAN compression, expressed in terms of Pages and signaled by a new Paging Dispatch mechanism.

Service providers are starting to deploy and interconnect computing capabilities across the network for hosting network functions and applications. In distributed computing environments, both computing and topological information are necessary in order to determine the more convenient infrastructure where to deploy such a service or application. This document proposes an initial approach towards the use of ALTO to provide such information and assist the selection of appropriate deployment locations for services and applications.

This document explores the issues involved in the use of Edge Computing resources to operationalize media use cases that involve Extended Reality (XR) applications. In particular, it discusses those applications that run on devices having different form factors and need Edge computing resources to mitigate the effect of problems such as a need to support interactive communication requiring low latency, limited battery power, and heat dissipation from those devices. The intended audience for this document are network operators who are interested in providing edge computing resources to operationalize the requirements of such applications.

The resulting knowledge and standardisation inputs help create a trusted, resilient foundation for future innovation—supporting economic growth, high-value job creation, and Europe’s leadership in advanced technologies that will ultimately benefit citizens and public services.

The advancement of quantum technologies and quantum networks is closely connected to human rights, particularly regarding cybersecurity concerns. However, the specific activities associated with this fellowship do not directly address societal impacts. This distinction arises
from the maturity of the concepts involved—such as networking functionalities—as well as the timeline and objectives outlined in the proposal.

 The objective is to present LoRa mesh networks to the IRTF GAIA WG of the IETF. GAIA seeks technologies to connect the unconnected world, and with IRTF GAIA as a vehicle, we seek to start the standardisation activity of this new technology.

The contribution made within this fellowship adds value to the development of LoRa mesh network technology. SMEs may then feel more confident in adopting the technology.
Impact on society (6th Open Call)
The technology provides a permanent low-cost and low-energy routed multi-hop communication network with moderate data rates. LoRa mesh networks allow a new kind of distributed IoT applications in the long range IoT layer. One of the application areas of LoRa mesh networks is the emerging field of distributed embedded machine learning. LoRa mesh networks are not yet standardised. To initialise standardisation, we will introduce the LoRaMesh networks as a design and reference implementation.

With this fellowship, I aim to help complete the standardisation of rLEDBAT in the I Internet Congestion Control Research Group (ICCRG) in the IETF/IRTF and of LEDBAT++ in the ICCRG in the IETF.

This activity contributes to achieving 6G's vision. To achieve low latency, 6G will have to embrace the novel Transport protocols that are being adopted in the Internet, notably Quic/BBR, LEDBAT++/rLEDBAT, as they are designed to reduce the latency of the communications. The RXQ project work on the integration of QUIC and rLEDBAT will provide one key missing piece in the toolset to achieve low latency.
