The work carried out in our working group, has several direct societal impact,including:
Sustainable Growth - Digitisation of European Industry: As these techniques are very important for the future evolution of multimedia technology. Even if this models do not reach the general public, they are already used in specialized markets, like maintenance and health applications.
Sustainable Growth - Robotics and autonomous systems: Plenoptic models have been considered for instance for autonomous driving. Radiance Fields are technologies developed for robotic applications.
Key Enablers - Artificial Intelligence: Learning based solutions are currently being researched for data representation. JPEG AI and JPEG Pleno Learning based Point Cloud Coding are already two projects that use Learning based technology to enable data representation with very low bit rates . and also for Internet of Things (IoT): These models will provide reliable formats for the 3D description of the environment, which by its nature is of special importance fro IoT technology.

The EU stakeholders will benefit from using a consistent application in projects to avoid waste of efforts. It will be a reference for EU manufactures in their product libraries to reach the right specification level of their products. EU SMEs will reduce time in creating their own specification as they can use something already available in the industry. In this way, they will be able to work across different countries, projects, and clients.
EU Private and public clients will more easily be able to define what information they require in a repeatable way. The EU supply chain will be facilitated in producing better quality information thanks to software applications that allow automated information delivery, including checking and validation of information delivered. With the vendor-neutral, interoperable data exchange standard, software developers are provided with equal access to the market, reducing vendor lock in and enabling fair competition.

The objective is to present LoRa mesh networks to the IRTF GAIA WG of the IETF. GAIA seeks technologies to connect the unconnected world, and with IRTF GAIA as a vehicle, we seek to start the standardisation activity of this new technology.

The technology provides a permanent low-cost and low-energy routed multi-hop communication network with moderate data rates. LoRa mesh networks allow a new kind of distributed IoT applications in the long range IoT layer. One of the application areas of LoRa mesh networks is the emerging field of distributed embedded machine learning. LoRa mesh networks are not yet standardised. To initialise standardisation, we will introduce the LoRaMesh networks as a design and reference implementation.

My contribution benefits European SMEs and societies by advancing the integration of TM and AI, addressing challenges in communication, efficiency, and inclusivity while aligning with global standards like ISO. For SMEs, this project provides at this stage guidelines and recommendations for accessible AI techniques that are aligned with TM standards and practices, enabling cost-effective automation of terminology processes and improved productivity. SMEs in specialized sectors (e.g., biotech, fintech) and transversal fields (e.g. translation, interpretation) gain better insights for handling domain-specific terminologies, enhancing competitiveness in European and global markets.

For SMEs, this work reduces adoption barriers by clarifying AI-related standards (e.g. AI Act, GDPR, ISO/IEC), mapping practical use cases, and addressing gaps in tools, skills, and compliance knowledge. Yes, my contribution positively impacts both European SMEs and societies. The Technical Report ISO/AWI TR 25896 provides practical, standards-aligned guidance on integrating AI into terminology workflows, helping SMEs—especially in language services, translation, and AI-adopt advanced technologies efficiently and responsibly. It lowers technical barriers, supports scalability, and promotes competitiveness across multilingual markets.

Standardizing the Internet of Things (IoT) Non-Terrestrial Network in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project by decreasing the power consumption to maintain mobile connectivity will allow new IoT use cases. Therefore, European SMEs can increase their competitiveness by supporting mobile connectivity for applications or devices with stringent low-power requirements, such as agriculture or energy/water management.

The proposed study under my fellowship can decrease the power consumption of user equipment and base stations. Energy price and availability are some of the most critical topics in Europe. Low-power IoT devices with non-terrestrial network connectivity have applications that may benefit society, such as sensors for agriculture, environmental monitoring, and energy/water management in rural areas.

Cybersecurity standards have traditionally focused on the operation of the hardware, software and firmware of the systems. The needs of the human elements have often not been fully considered and negative viewpoints are sometimes heard in cybersecurity standards meeting with respect to untrained and/or vulnerable consumers/end users. By considering and supporting the `human element’ in products with digital elements (an essential element), it is hoped to reduce the potential for harm to the system and also to reduce the harm to the end user. In particular improved communication should reduce the physiological harm caused to the end user when something goes wrong and they think it is their fault. Cybersecurity standards for digital systems can thus be seen to support vulnerable users and to acknowledge that all end users can be vulnerable in specific circumstances

The gaps that this fellowship enables me to address has been to dedicate solid time first for the ECMA meetings that I convened, but also for the community background work that needs support and attention. The priorities are to users the creation of the core specifications for ECMA approval, which has been challenging because of the influx of attention on PURL for SBOM and CRA compliance. The challenge from PURL getting increased attention meant needing to cater to new contributors and supporting long debates and addressing objections, in particular on topics like character encoding.

PURL makes it easier to integrate multiple SBOM tools for CRA compliance, lowering the costs of compliance for SMEs.

The expected impact of this project to usher PURL standardization will significantly improve the accuracy of how free and open source software packages are identified and reported in SBOMs. Software developers - both of open source projects and commercial software vendors - will be able to rely on a stable and widely-accepted international standard, across tooling and data for Software Composition Analysis (SCA), SBOMs, and open source compliance. This will greatly improve the overall security posture of any software using free and open source software packages which itself is the vast majority of software. As a universal identifier for packages, PURL enables the exchange of software inventories across partners in the software supply chain and SCA and SBOM tooling and data. This makes PURL the foundation of all SBOM and VEX standards, which are critical for cybersecurity and essential for compliance with upcoming regulations like the European Union's Cyber Resilience Act. Any recipient of an SBOM can rely on PURL as the unique identifier to query vulnerability databases for package metadata and other information about the package used in the software product or service.

Contribution to the national body position through discussions with our members provides a voice to the concerns or challenges of our SMEs as well as to larger organisations.

It is critical to establish common European standards linking hardware and software particularly in new areas of technology and standardization. Example use cases include the improvement of reliability of edge and cloud computing where processing of personal data, or highly regulated data is concerned. This is even more important when considering the complexities of combining (even anonymized) data sets and processing that data in cloud hosted environments. With the impact of layered approaches to address these complexities the necessity to harmonize software and cloud-based techniques is essential.

Impact on SMEs (8th Open Call)

This preliminary work item has been proposed so that we can separate out the concepts involved in observability. Observability can occur across cloud computing, mutli-cloud, distributed platforms and other areas. From early discussions with national bodies on the proposed preliminary work item was created to ensure a clear separation between the standards that are anticipated to come out of the work. Work on dataspaces with the CEN/CENELEC JTC 25 group have also indicated a need for greater quality management which can be enhanced through the application of observability. With these potential work items delineated more clearly we can aid growing organizations to improve their quality management in a scalable manner. This is essential for companies expanding across a European or wider market.

As a national body we have members contributing to the CEN Focus Group on 'Data, Dataspaces, Cloud and Edge'. We feel this is important as the cloud supports data and dataspaces whilst at the same time data is utilised in supporting the cloud. This could have a large impact on standards created in the near future. Obtaining expert advice from many areas is important in this early stage of these standards.

Europe needs to continue the harmonisation of standards across standards bodies in evolving areas such of software development for cloud hosted or cloud enabled technologies. The key areas of Cloud computing and distributed platforms, and software development are essential supports for dataspaces, data management in Big Data and AI.
