My contribution provides SMEs with an illustrative example and accompanying requirements to detect and mitigate bias in AI systems using tabular data. This contribution will assist AI providers and deployers with the detection and mitigation of unwanted bias and thereby assist them in complying with the EU AI Act and protecting fundamental rights.

Impact on society (7th Open Call)

My contribution addresses a current lack of detail regarding the detection and mitigation of unwanted bias accruing due to (high-risk) AI systems. As such, my contribution helps AI providers and deployers evaluate situations where bias may be a concern as well as help comply with the EU AI Act (Article 10) and protect fundamental rights.

A strong priority for this work is to contribute to standards to enable consideration of the support for data management in the cloud. Data spaces can only be fully realised with the application of strong quality management controls through standardisation at multiple levels.

Contribution to the national body position through discussions with our members provides a voice to the concerns or challenges of our SMEs as well as to larger organisations.

Impact on SMEs (6th Open Call)

It is critical to establish common European standards linking hardware and software particularly in new areas of technology and standardization. Example use cases include the improvement of reliability of edge and cloud computing where processing of personal data, or highly regulated data is concerned. This is even more important when considering the complexities of combining (even anonymized) data sets and processing that data in cloud hosted environments. With the impact of layered approaches to address these complexities the necessity to harmonize software and cloud-based techniques is essential.

Impact on society (4th Open Call)

As a national body we have members contributing to the CEN Focus Group on 'Data, Dataspaces, Cloud and Edge'. We feel this is important as the cloud supports data and dataspaces whilst at the same time data is utilised in supporting the cloud. This could have a large impact on standards created in the near future. Obtaining expert advice from many areas is important in this early stage of these standards.

Impact on SMEs (4th Open Call)

The formation of a new IEC working group on fibre optic quantum interconnect will align with the technologies of many European SMEs who would benefit from early engagement to develop standards, which help accelerate commercial adoption of their approaches. Therefore, I am strongly engaging with European quantum SMEs to secure support for the proposal and encourage participation. The successful formation of the WG would be followed by the establishment of liaisons to ISO/IEC JTC3 and CEN/CENELEC TC86

Impact on SMEs (6th Open Call)

The formation of IEC TC86 WG11 aligns well with the technologies of many European SMEs who would benefit from early engagement to develop standards, which help accelerate commercial adoption of their approaches. I am strongly engaging with European quantum SMEs to encourage participation from Europe; at the moment, the membership of the group overwhelmingly European (85%).

Impact on society (4th Open Call)

Europe is already a world-leader in the scientific research and industrialisation of quantum technologies, especially with regards to quantum communication and quantum computation technologies. My fellowship will strengthen European influence on quantum standards and by assuming a strong position on quantum technologies from industrial, academic and standardisation angles, Europe will be in a stronger position to establish a global competitive edge in this field.
