- Standardisation Contribution for Accessible Mixed Reality Navigation Interfaces in Europe
Accessibility of ICT products and services
Standardised semantic models for accessible MR navigation would let European SMEs build accessible XR products without each reinventing proprietary audio/haptic conventions, reducing development cost and creating interoperability across engines, platforms and assistive technologies — the accessibility profile a user configures once would work across conformant products. This directly supports European Accessibility Act (EU 2019/882) compliance as immersive services fall within its scope, giving SMEs a practicable technical route rather than bespoke retrofitting. Societally, the work targets the inclusion of blind and visually impaired citizens in virtual worlds, culture and play (UN CRPD Art. 30), and in MR navigation of public space. Technologically, embedding accessibility metadata in mainstream content pipelines (OpenUSD) would make accessibility a property of authoring rather than an after-market feature, positioning Europe to shape global XR accessibility standards.

As a newcomer to formal standardisation, this fellowship converted research and product experience into concrete standards artifacts in three months: a gap analysis, normative taxonomies, and a submission-ready contribution aligned with EN 301 549. StandICT.eu lowers the entry barrier for SMEs and early-career experts: it funds the drafting time no company can easily spare, connects you to the community, and turns “we should contribute to standards someday” into a deliverable with a deadline. I would recommend it to any technical expert whose field lacks the standards it needs.
