In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that ICT standardisation and open source can complement one another in the development of technical specifications—especially in fast-evolving digital domains (Blind & Böhm, 2019). Yet, they also have the potential to act as rivals, each shaping the rules for future technologies in different ways (Böhm & Eisape, 2021). Despite a few promising examples of convergence, the standardisation and open source communities largely continue to operate in silos.
This disconnect is becoming increasingly problematic. With the growing importance of open source software in key emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), there is an urgent need to reflect open source developments in the corresponding international standards. At the same time, the European Commission has introduced landmark legislative initiatives, including the Cyber Resilience Act, Artificial Intelligence Act, and Data Act, each accompanied by standardisation requests that require robust technical input. To ensure the timely availability of high-quality standards, closer engagement with open source communities and developers is essential.
Jointly hosted by the Standards Academy of StandICT and OSAWARDS, this webinar aims to:
- Explore the challenges and opportunities at the intersection of open source and standardisation,
- Share best practices from industry and policy perspectives, and
- Identify actionable pathways for future collaboration—especially in the context of upcoming standardisation requests.
This event is particularly relevant for:
- Standardisation experts leveraging open source tools,
- Open source developers interested in shaping standards,
- Representatives of Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) and open source foundations,
- And policy makers working on digital and industrial innovation frameworks.
