A robust, up-to-date ISO/IEC 17839 series and its companion standards (ISO/IEC 24787, ISO/IEC 7816-11) give European citizens a privacy-by-design authentication technology: biometric data is captured, stored and matched only inside the cardholder's tamper-proof device, never in central databases. This directly supports GDPR-aligned data minimisation and strengthens trust in payments, access control and e-identity, including the EUDI Wallet. Economically, the leading BSoC vendors are European, and clear interface and conformance requirements lower barriers for SMEs that supply single components (sensors, secure elements, algorithms) into larger ecosystems - interoperability replaces costly proprietary integrations and widens market access. In the medium term this sustains European leadership in secure identification technology; in the long term it reduces dependency on centralised, non-European identity infrastructures and supports innovation in biometric smartcards.

Custom funding impact (2nd Open Call 2029)This short-term fellowship supported my engagement in the further development of ISO/IEC 17839-3 Biometric System on Card - Part 3: Logical information interchange mechanism (Edition 2), in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 17/WG 11 "Application of biometrics to cards and personal identification". More specifically, it supported my participation in the WG11 hybrid meeting in London (May 13–15, 2026).
