Impact of the StandICT.eu 2023 Fellowship Program

The sixth edition of the “Following the Fellows” Report is published

PISA – Italy, 30.01.2023 - StandICT.eu 2023 shares the results of its Fellowship Programme in the Fifth Impact Report “Following the Fellows”. StandICT.eu2023 fellowship programme aims at fostering the participation of the European experts in the international ICT standardization. It will fund 400+ European standardisation experts in a series of 9 Open calls, providing 3M€ of funding.

This report presents the tangible output of 39 applicants who received funding under the 6th StandICT.eu 2023's Open Call. This edition pinpoints the evidence-based outcomes related to the delivered results in the engaged Standardisation Organisations (SDOs) and within the targeted Work Groups and Technical Committees.

StandICT.eu 2023 aims to support and facilitate specialists across a broad spectrum of ICT standardisation fields, as defined in the Rolling Plan for ICT. Therefore, the fellowship outcomes are also narrated around the four main technological areas: Key Enablers and Security (including namely Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, 5G, Quantum Technology), Sustainable Growth (covering Intelligent Transport Systems, Digital Twins etc.), Innovation for Digital Single Market (focusing on Blockchain and DLT and FinTech) and Societal Challenges (comprising eHealth and healthy living, Digital skills, education and more).

The 6th edition brought new research topics on “e-Transport” and "Building Trust" in the granted fellowships. The trending topics continue to be Cybersecurity, AI and Blockchain.

This report offers the granted experts the opportunity to speak about their work and contributions to standards efforts while presenting key facts and figures showing how the results obtained intercalate European ICT standardisation priorities and gaps and how the tangible impact achieved contributes to societal and industrial challenges.

Here are some examples of the sixth call’s perspectives and contributions shared by the fellows:

My fellowship’s contribution is in advancing reference standards development combining recent progress in Artificial Intelligence based on neural networks and machine learning with management of renewable energy generated in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems along with their operation-and-maintenance (O&M) and their smart on-grid integration and control. ”, summarises Agnieszka Rządkowska, Chair of the European Solar Network (Belgium).

"With this fellowship, I am mainly working on the ISO/AWI 24138 International Standard Content Code (ISCC) that a new identifier for digital media assets. The ISCC can help creative individuals and media organisations as well as online platforms to better manage digital media assets. This fellowship enables me to integrate the demands and requirements from stakeholders of various sectors in the media industries.“  explains Sebastian Posth, Convenor of ISO/TC 46/SC 9/WG 18 (Netherlands)

The “Following the Fellows” series makes perfect reading for the StandICT.eu 2023 community, the European Commission, National Standards Bodies (NSBs),  Private-Public Partnerships (PPPs), the Multi-Stakeholder Platform, SDOs and other interested parties who would like to gain more insight into ICT standardisation within a European context.

The project’s overall mission is to ensure European-wide active participation within the global ICT standardisation landscape and the contributions it may make to support the efforts of the Multi-Stakeholder Platform for ICT Standardisation.
